What is the budwig Diet?

« During my research I found that the blood of seriously ill cancer patients had deficiency of unsaturated essential fats. I also noticed that cancer patients had a strange greenish-yellow substance in their blood which is not present in the blood of healthy people. I wanted to develop a healing program for cancer »



According to the researches of Dr .Joanna Budwig in 1950,  the blood system of cancer patients often shows a tremendous lack of deficiencies of phosphatides and lipoproteins. Those deficiencies are caused by a lack of oxygen in the human’s body cells which as it turn is caused by a deficiency of pi-electrons, little park-plugs helping our body to breathe properly. So in order to fill up and correct this deficiencies, Dr. Budwig searched the best source of pi-electrons which she found in two unsaturated fatty acids: Linolenic and Linoleic. And those two important unsaturated fatty acids are contained in flaxseed oil.



Or, the above described acids are not only a perfect source to re-oxygenate cancerous cells but they also are able to repair and restore the lipid membranes of every cell of our human body.


After this discovery the only problem left was to find a way to get those acids immediately into the human body’s cells.


  1. Why flaxseed oil needs to be combined with Quark or Cottage Cheese.


For being able that the unsaturated fatty acids of the flaxseed oil can be perfectly transferred to cancerous cells, our body needs a water-soluble solution.


In general, oil is not water-soluble and consequently can not be immediately be transferred to our cells. Reason why, Dr. Budwig searched for a solution to make flaxseed « water-soluble » or at least absorbable.

And this explains why the flaxseed oil has to be combined with Quark or Cottage cheese as the sulphurated amino acids found in the Quark or Cottage Cheese, helps the oil being absorbed by our cells.


In addition, Quark or Cottage Cheese contain two other ingredients which are a great source to stop cells mutating into cancer cells.


1) SULFUR which helps to reduce and stop the cell’s division

2) DETROROTARY LACTIC ACID which helps to cause automatic cell death (« apoptosis ») by increasing the cell’s ph-value to an alkaline level of around 7.4. (Remember, referring to Dr. Warburg, cancer cells can not grow in an alkaline environment).

Normalizing the ph.-level helps to stop cells mutating into cancer cells.



The Johanna Budwig Diet takes time to work and usually takes 3 to 6 months to see results in with with cancer.




  • 250 ml of cold pressed organic flaxseed oil mixed with honey and freshly pressed fruit juices.
  • In case, a cancer patient is very weak, Dr. Budwig recommends to replace the juice by a glass of champagne the juice should be replaced by a glass of champagne facilating the absorption of oil as well as re-energizing a patient.




Before breakfast:


In order to improve your digestion, Dr. Budwig recommends to start your day with one of acidophilus milk or a glass of organic sauerkraut juice (1 hour before breakfast).




Start with a cup of freshly brewed green or herbal tea (without sugar or milk). Black tea is only occasionally permitted. Then you should prepare and eat one portion oft the BUDWIG Muesli which consists of the following ingredients:


  • 45-50 ml of pure organic flaxseed oil ( 3-4 tablespoons)
  • 100 grams of organic low fat Quark or Cottage Cheese (max 2% fat/6 tablespoons)


This ingredients should be mixed by using a blender or an electronic mixer  at slow speed for 2 minutes.


Once finished you should add 25 grams of freshly grounded flax seeds.


In case you want to pepp up your Budwig Muesli, you are allowed to add the following ingredients:


  • one tablespoon of raw UN-pasteurised honey
  • all kind of nuts or seeds like grounded walnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds except of peanuts
  • all kind of spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, vanilla etc. (please make sure that they are all sugar free)
  • a cup of goat milk or any kind of vegetable milk (oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk)
  • a cup of fruits (bananas, blackberries, blueberries, grated apples.)  or dried fruits



Morning tea


  • A glass of fresh apple, celery, carrot or beet-apple juice.





  • Raw Salad (combination of greens and carrots, beets, cauliflower and kohlrabi) with Yoghurt-Flax Oil Mayonnaise:
  • 30 ml flaxseed
  • 30 ml of milk
  • 30 ml natural yogurt
  • 30 ml of lemon juice or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of mustard, marjoram or dill
  • a pinch of salt
  • Glass of freshly pressed carrot juice, apple, celery or beet-apple juice
  • Steamed vegetables, potatoes or gluten-free grains (rice, buckwheat, quinoa) in combination with the Budwig Mix (Cottage cheese and flaxseed oil)
  • One cup of freshly brewed herbal tea





  • A small glass of fresh juice/ champagne with 1-2 tablespoons of flaxseeds or
  • A normal sized glass of fresh carrot juice, apple, celery or beet-apple juice.



Dinner (not later than 7 pm)


  • Freshly homemade vegetable soup
  • For more creaminess: add the Flaxseed & Cottage Cheese Mix
  • 1 cup of herbal teal





  • In order to avoid that the muesli turns rancid, it should be consumed immediately after its preparation
  • The flaxseed oil has to be organic, cold pressed or extra virgin and absolutely needs to be stored in the fridge. Do not use High Lignum flaxseed oil.
  • The Muesli as described above should be consumed once (during the first week) and then twice a day.
  • Sugar, Animal fats, salad oils, meats and any dairy fats should be completely avoided.
  • Freshly squeezed vegetable juices can be consumed as much as desired
  • Herbal (peppermint, rosehip, fennel, grape etc.) or green tea should be drunk three times a day)
  • Patients diagnosed with liver or pancreatic cancer should start with 1 teaspoon of flaxseed oil at a time and increase slowly until their body has adjusted. Dr Budwig recommends a maintenance dose of 1 tablespoon of the oil per one hundred pounds of body weight.
